News and Notes from PolicyViz - Issue #11
It was 70 degrees in Virginia on Sunday, so we seem to be on our way to spring! I'm looking forward to getting back out on the ballfield and in the garden.
As you may know, the PolicyViz Podcast is in its 8th season. With more than 200 episodes, it's one of the longest running podcasts about data and data visualization. Early on, I tried supporting the show with paid ads, but it was difficult to find sponsors, arrange contracts, record the pre-reads, and so on. So, I then moved to Patreon where a dedicated (small) group of folks have been financially supporting the show.
But it takes a lot to create the podcast--there are costs for sound and video editing, transcription, design (for the video), web hosting, and more. So today, I'm changing things around as a way to help support the show (with more details in this blog post):
I'm making three changes:
I'm simplifying the Patreon channel. I'm creating a single tier that will enable supporters to ask questions of guests and get sneak peeks to upcoming episodes. If you're interested, you can check it out here.
I'm adding a paid version of this newsletter. I'll keep the free version going--that's the one you're reading right now--but I'm adding a paid version that will bring behind-the-scenes look to the podcast (and blog), previews of YouTube videos before they go live, and the opportunity to meet with me on Zoom. I've made a 15% off coupon available to the first 15 people who register for the paid subscription. Check out this link to see if there are any left!
I'm now an early adopter of the Winno app, a text messaging service that will enable me to send 2-3 texts each week about what I think are small, but important data visualization tips, tricks, and strategies. If you're interested, you can check it out here and get a 14-day free trial.
You can of course continue to receive this free newsletter and read the blog and listen to the podcast, but if you'd like to help support any of these efforts, please consider visiting one of those platforms.
Next time, I'll share some information about some new projects I'm working on.
Thanks and take care,
Jon
Podcast Episode #213: Elevate Your DataViz Team
We've all seen the various ways to learn about data visualization. There are courses on various platforms and learning areas, books, blogs, and more. But these tend to be one-way modes of learning: Someone records a video or writes a blog post (or records a podcast!) and releases out in the world for us to learn. Recently, a team of experts in the data visualization field got together to try something different--a learning environment where learners get continual access to their educators. They can ask regular questions, read blog posts, and have regular calls. On the podcast this week, I chat with the four founders and mentors of the new Elevate Your DataViz Skills community. I think you're really going to like this episode.
Podcast Episode #212: Dr. Cedric Scherer
Dr. Cedric Scherer is a graduate computational ecologist with a passion for design. In 2020, he combined his expertise in analyzing and visualizing large data sets in R with his passion to become a freelance data visualization specialist.
