News and Notes from PolicyViz - Issue #16 - Subscribers
Hi all,
I hope you're well and staying healthy and safe. It's been a weird spring here in Northern Virginia. On and off, hot and cold, rainy and dry. It has made for some unpleasant nights behind the plate in my spring umpiring season.
I've also found myself falling behind on making videos and writing blog posts. I guess I put a lot of pressure on myself to create content and get it out there, but I'm trying to do better. I've been really enjoying Eva Murray's twitter feed lately--Eva used to run the Makeover Monday project, but has since shifted her focus, and her notes about FOMO, working hard, and work-life balance have really resonated with me. I'm sure there are other resources out there, but I appreciate that Eva is in the dataviz community, so I can really identify with what she's talking about.
It's also proposal season at the Urban Institute, which is not my favorite time of year. There are a lot of things one needs to do to get a project pulled together and proposed--budgets, teaming agreements, NDAs, and, yeah, the actual proposal (which, even if the project is awarded, is basically thrown in the trash).
But I have several exciting research projects underway, mostly extending the work in last year's Do No Harm Guide. We're working on issues around data privacy, accessibility, and data around gender and sexuality. I'm really excited to bring these projects to life!
I'm also trying to do more work around teaching kids about data, data science, and data visualization. The Data4Kids project I co-produced with my Urban colleague Claire Bowen was really fun and exciting. And even though I'm not an educator, this is a passion of mine and I hope I can do more in this space in the future.
Well, I hope you're well. Check out some of the links and things below!
Thanks and take care,
Jon
